Partnerships on T&E

ICTSD is engaged in the following collaborative partnerships in Trade & Environment:

A Southern Agenda on Trade and Environment (with IISD and the RING)

The Trade Knowledge Network (TKN) is part of a project aimed at building long-term capacity to address the issues of trade and sustainable development in developing country research institutions, NGOs and governments through increased awareness, knowledge and understanding of the issues. The TKN will link network members and consolidate new and existing research on trade and sustainable development.

GETI is the Working Group on Environment, Trade and Investment of IUCN's Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP). The group seeks to help in defining the role of IUCN - the World Conservation Union (see below) in trade and environment, focusing on providing practical information services to the IUCN membership on the interface between international trade rules and biodiversity. ICTSD is currently hosting the GETI Secretariat and supports it in its activities and efforts.

CEESP, the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, is an inter-disciplinary network of professionals whose mission is to act as a source of advice on the environmental, economic, social and cultural factors that affect natural resources and biological diversity and to provide guidance and support towards effective policies and practices in environmental conservation and sustainable development. ICTSD has mainly been collaborating with CEESP through the Working Group on Environment, Trade and Investment (GETI).

ICTSD collaborates with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in a number of areas, including most recently a series of briefings on the Doha Round negotiations and on the 'Southern Agenda on Trade and Environment' project.

ICTSD is collaborating with IUCN - the World Conservation Union on various themes and areas, including the bi-weekly newsletter BRIDGES Trade BioRes. ICTSD and IUCN jointly organised several workshops and side events for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), and ICTSD is assisting IUCN's International Policy, Biodiversity and International Agreements Unit in defining a strategic trade and biodiversity programme. ICTSD also collaborated with IUCN in preparing and running a Global Biodiversity Forum in the leadup to the WTO's Cancun Ministerial in September 2003.

As part of its activities under the Southern Agenda on Trade and Environment project, ICTSD has partnered with the Regional and International Networking Group (RING) of organisations working for sustainable development, in order to help reflect a regional perspective on trade, environment and sustainable development in trade negotiations.

Concerted Action on Trade and Environment (CAT & E). This new project sets up a consortium of European institutions that aim to work together to provide cutting-edge research on issues at the intersection of trade and environment. The concerted action will be structured around a series of substantive questions and will also respond to the dynamics of this evolving research agenda and generate new impulses for research.
