Organised by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) Focusing on the sustainability of natural resources, this summit will bring together decision makers from government, business, civil society, the media, the research and scientific community to discuss and debate long term sustainable development. Themes include climate change and health, technology for the poor, prudent use of natural resources, and water management systems.

24-28 January, Davos, Switzerland: WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM ANNUAL MEETING 2007: SHAPING THE GLOBAL AGENDA, THE SHIFTING POWER EQUATION. Be it in geopolitics from west to east, or in business from producers to consumers, power is shifting at a tremendous pace, raising questions of how we are to organize and operate in a changing global environment. This year's World Economic Forum Annual Meeting summit is a unique opportunity will bring together leaders from all walks of life -- business, government, the media, academia, the arts and civil society -- to examine global shifts in power -- in geopolitics from west to east, as well as in business from producers to consumers. They will address questions of how to organise and operate in a changing global environment, and seek to this shift and shape the 2007 global agenda.

26-27 January, Budapest, Hungary: FARMSUBSIDY.ORG CONFERENCE. Farmsubsidy.org is planning to hold a two-day conference on "Transparency in European Union Farm Subsidies." The conference will assemble current participants in the Farmsubsidy.org network and people who would like to become involved in promoting greater transparency in European Union agricultural policies. Farmsubsidy.org is a project coordinated by the Danish International Center for Analytical Reporting (DICAR) and EU Transparency, a non-profit organisation in the UK. Its aim is to obtain detailed data relating to payments and recipients of farm subsidies in every EU member state and make this data available in a way that is useful to European citizens. The project involves journalists, analysts and campaigners in more than ten countries.

29-31 January, Brussels, Belgium: 2007 EUROPEAN RENEWABLE ENERGY POLICY CONFERENCE. Participants will hear the Commissioners for Energy and Environment, Mr Andris Piebalgs and Mr Stavros Dimas speak on the future of renewables; find out about the priorities of the German Presidency; meet, network and be fully update on all the key developments in energy policy.

31 January-1 February, Geneva, Switzerland: EXPLORATORY DIALOGUE ON PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT THROUGH TRADE. 2-3 February, Paris, France: CITIZENS OF THE EARTH - THE PARIS CONFERENCE ON GLOBAL ECOLOGICAL GOVERNANCE. At the instigation of French President Jacques Chirac, this conference will bring together government ministers, scientists, business leaders, NGOs, and public figures from more than 60 countries to assess the threats facing the environment, develop priorities for combating those threats, and work towards creating a United Nations Environment Organisation to promote better environmental governance.

1-2 March, Geneva, Switzerland: DISCIPLINING FISHERIES SUBSIDIES - INCORPORATION SUSTAINABILITY AT THE WTO AND BEYOND. Developing new disciplines on fisheries subsidies that present sustainability concerns is a priority for achieving sustainable management of the world's fisheries resources. After several years of work on subsidies reform at UNEP and WWF, the remaining question is how "sustainability" can be incorporated into appropriate and workable conditions on fisheries subsidies at the WTO and beyond, including national and regional level fisheries policy. 5 March to 1 April, e-conference: WATER SCARCITY AND AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGIES. This moderated e-mail conference is being organised by the FAO Biotechnology Forum in collaboration with FAO's water programme, and will coincide with the World Water Day, which is celebrated each year on 22 March. A related background document is available online. The document gives an overview of the current status and future perspectives regarding water availability and use on Earth as well as a discussion of some major strategies that can be employed to deal with water scarcity. It then looks at the issue of water use in agriculture in more detail as well as some of the potential ways in which biotechnology could contribute to this area (e.g. increasing the efficiency of water use in agriculture; application of mycorrhizal fungi; or improving wastewater treatment). The following themes will be covered: sustainability and development in Asia and the Pacific; Governance approaches to national sustainable development strategies in Asia and the Pacific; The role of stakeholders in sustainability strategies; and integrating sustainability in development planning.

19 March, Washington D.C., United States: MARINE FISHERIES AND OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS: A GLOBAL PROBLEM IN SEARCH OF POLICY. Organised by the American Meteorological Society, this seminar will deal with the following questions: What is the current condition of marine fisheries globally? What are the likely contributors to that condition? What does it mean that, as a society, we are engaged in 'eating down the marine food chain'? What are the implications of this? Is there evidence that we are losing species richness within ocean marine ecosystems? If so, what are the societal implications? Are there policies that would serve to restore marine fisheries and ocean ecosystems to a healthier state given the present rates of consumption of sea food? Would these policies be a mix of national and international efforts and, if so, over what time frame?

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Generation Challenge Program (GCP) and the China Association of Agricultural Science Societies are sponsoring the 2nd International Conference on Plant Molecular Breeding. The event will focus primarily on applied plant genomics and molecular plant breeding technology but will also cover potential ecological risks related to genetic engineering as well as intellectual property rights (IPR) issues.

28-30 March, Oslo, Norway. THE OSLO CONFERENCE ON GOOD GOVERNANCE, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY. The Oslo Conference aims to take the ongoing debate about business and sustainability beyond corporate social responsibility by providing a platform for an integrated approach comprised of key players from government, business, academia, trade-unions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). 2-3 May, Minneapolis, US: TOWARD A GLOBAL FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL POLICY FOR AN OPEN INTERNATIONAL ECONOMY. The worldwide tendency to consider food and agricultural policies from a national or domestic perspective has created barriers to the efficient use of the world's agricultural resources and reduced the contributions that agriculture can make to global economic welfare. This symposium to honour University of Minnesota Regents Professor Emeritus G. Edward Schuh will bring together scholars and policy experts to discuss how to move toward a global food and agricultural policy for an open international economy.

The twenty-sixth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will be held from 7-18 May 2007. 12 May, global: WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY. The theme of this annual event is "Kids and Fair Trade". Endorsed by the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT), the World Fair Trade Day calls on all to celebrate Fair Trade Organisations, buy more Fair Trade goods through Fair Trade stores, Fair Trade catalogues and campaign groups and encourage conventional companies to sell more Fair Trade products.

14-15 May, London, UK: THE NEW POLITICS OF ENERGY - EUROPE IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT. European oil and gas import dependency is rising rapidly which highlights the need for a European response to energy security. The European Commission and Council will prepare an Energy Policy for Europe Action Plan for its meeting in March 2007. Current thinking is that energy security should be considered in the context of general foreign and security policy. This Chatham House conference will explore the rolling out of the 'new' EU strategy and compare the EU strategy with those of other countries with similar concerns.

14-15 May, Paris, France: INNOVATION, GROWTH AND EQUITY. This multi-stakeholder summit will bring together business, labour, civil society, and government leaders to discuss the hottest issues on the international agenda in conjunction with the annual Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Ministerial Summit. The 75th General Session of the International Committee of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) will bring together representatives of 168 OIE Member Countries, as well as observers from the international organisations that have signed an official agreement with the OIE as well as other international and regional organisations and invited guests. The International Committee establishes the policies of the OIE and supervises their application. 28 May to 1 June, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: EAST AFRICAN ORGANIC CONFERENCE. This conference will bring together public, private, and NGO sector stakeholders from East Africa and beyond, is being jointly organised by UNEP-UNCTAD, IFOAM, the Tanzanian Organic Agriculture Movement, the Export Promotion of Organic Products from Africa Programme, in cooperation with the Government of Tanzania, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Trade Centre (UNCTAD/WTO). The aim of the conference is to mobilise support for organic agriculture in East Africa by sensitising decision makers and other stakeholders about the potential of organic agriculture as a sustainable development and market access opportunity. 3-15 June, The Hague, Netherlands. FOURTEENTH MEETING OF THE CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES TO CITES. Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) will consider 40 new proposals for rules changes regarding the protection of specific species. Participants will also discuss enforcement of CITES regulations, the control of illicit trafficking, and the effects of CITES rules on the rural poor. The meeting's agenda also includes the establishment of a new strategic vision for 2008 to 2013.

4-6 June, Riyadh, Saudia Arabia. WORKSHOP ON WTO DISPUTE SETTLEMENT PROCEDURES: SANITARY AND PHYTOSANITARY MEASURES, TECHNICAL BARRIERS TO TRADE AND AGRICULTURE. This workshop, sponsored by the UN Conference on Trade and Development, offers a general and up-to-date review of WTO rules of on dispute settlement procedures related to the Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. Organised by the UN Environment Programme, this day of international celebration of the environment will feature street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns. 11-13 June, Bangkok, Thailand: PLANNING WORKSHOP ON STRATEGIES AND OPTIONS FOR INTEGRATION BIOFUELS AND RURAL RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR POVERTY REDUCTION. This interagency planning meeting, convened by the Asian Development Bank, hopes to review the policy status of biofuel development in the Great Mekong Subregion, develop a plan of action for the national and subregional assessment of biofuels, and discuss the scope for investment cooperation and regulations.

11-14 June, Riksgränsen, Sweden: SWEDISH "MIDNIGHT SUN" DIALOGUE ON CLIMATE CHANGE. 17-23 September, Oxford, England: CLIMATE CHANGE: SCIENCE, POLITICS AND THE MANAGEMENT OF UNCERTAINTY. Even with the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report making ever clearer the scientific consensus about humanity's contribution to global warming, the severity of its impact remains highly uncertain. This conference, hosted by Deutsche Wissenschaft, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will consider the difficulties of making policies to address the problems of global warming within a context of such uncertainty.

18-27 September, Geneva, Switzerland: JOINT MEETING OF THE FAO PANEL OF EXPERTS ON PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN FOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE WHO CORE ASSESSMENT GROUP ON PESTICIDE RESIDUES (JMPR). This meeting will consider a list of substances scheduled for evaluation. The list has been prepared by the Joint FAO/WHO Secretariat of the Meeting and is based on recommendations of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR), previous Expert Meetings, and direct requests from governments, other interested organisations, and producers of substances that have been evaluated previously.

19-21 September, Bern, Switzerland: NEW APPROACHES TO PLANT BREEDING OF ORPHAN CROPS IN AFRICA. This conference is being organised by the University of Bern. It will bring together scientists from both developed and developing countries to discuss techniques that could be implemented in a scheme of orphan crop improvement. Orphan (neglected or lost) crops are crops of high economic value in developing countries, particularly in Africa. These include cereal crops (such as millet and tef), legumes (cow pea, grass pea, and bambara groundnut), and root crops (cassava and sweet potato). In addition, the future prospects and feasibility of modern biotechnology in African agriculture will be discussed.

23-26 September, Calgary, Canada: ABIC 2007. The annual Agricultural Biotechnology International Conference (ABIC) will focus on topics including food preservation, storage, processing and development technologies; consumer choices and perceptions; pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and cosmetics; livestock genomics; zoonotics; rural development and enhancement; and industrial Bioproducts.

24-28 September, Belo Horizonte, Brazil: WORKSHOP ON BIOSAFETY OF GM CROPS AND THE EVOLUTION OF REGULATORY FRAMEWORKS. Organised by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, this workshop is aimed primarily at people who will be in a position to review applications for the deliberate release of genetically modified crops. It will a training workshop on genetically modified organism biosafety, with formal lectures on biosafety and several sessions of hands-on exercises as in actual regulatory review process. There will also be a chance to analyse and discuss the near term evolution and challenges in genetic modification biosafety, namely the developments of genetically modified crops expressing complex phenotypes, non-food applications and gene-restriction constructs.

24 September, New York, USA: UN HIGH LEVEL MINISTERIAL MEETING ON CLIMATE CHANGE. A high-level ministerial meeting is being planned to take place during the UN General Assembly sessions in September. The event is tentatively scheduled for 24 September 2007, at UN headquarters in New York.

27-28 September, Washington, DC, USA: US-HOSTED MEETING OF MAJOR ECONOMIES ON ENERGY SECURITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE. US President Bush has issued invitations to major economies to attend this meeting, including the EU, France, Germany, Italy, UK, Japan, China, Canada, India, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa and the UN.

1-3 October, Davos, Switzerland: SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TOURISM AND CLIMATE CHANGE. This conference will seek to set in place the research and policy measures that will enable tourism to respond to the challenges of climate change and at the same time reduce the industry's own contributions to global warming. It is organised by the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) together with the UN Environment Programme, and with support from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Swiss Federal Government.

4-5 October, Geneva, Switzerland: WTO PUBLIC FORUM 2007: "HOW CAN THE WTO HELP HARNESS GLOBALISATION?" The WTO Public Forum 2007 will address how the WTO can help harness globalisation. 18-19 October, UN Headquarters, New York, USA: EXPERT GROUP MEETING: INNOVATIVE FINANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. The UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) will be holding its 16th session in the first half of 2008, focusing on policy options and practical measures to address challenges in the areas of agriculture, desertification, drought, rural development, including a special focus on Africa. To inform the discussions, the Division for Sustainable Development, which acts as Secretariat to the Commission, will organise this meeting, with a particular focus on the themes of CSD-16.

22-23 October, Minneapolis, Minnesota: LESSONS FROM NAFTA: BUILDING A NEW FREE TRADE AGENDA. 27-31 October, El-Minia, Egypt: THE 8TH AFRICAN CROP SCIENCE SOCIETY CONFERENCE. General topics at the conference, which is jointly organised by the African Crop Science Society (ACSS) and the Faculty of Agriculture at Egypt's Minia University, will include crop improvement and physiology, post harvest handling and food sciences, crop protection, rural socio-economics, agricultural extension and education, agricultural economics, crop genetics and biotechnology, integration of livestock in crop production, and soils and agricultural engineering sciences.
