- THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL FISHING INDUSTRY SAFETY & HEALTH CONFERENCE.
The meeting, convened by BOBO-IGO - FAO - NIOSH, and followed by
a thematic workshop
on Tsunami on February 6-7, will bring together individuals from
around the world who share research and programme expertise on the problems
facing small-scale and commercial fishing and the latest information
on fishing safety promotion to help build an international fishing safety
coalition and promote action to reduce injury and death in the small-scale
and commercial fishing sectors. The workshop will review the long-term
rehabilitation efforts of various agencies and organisations towards
the recovery and productivity of the communities affected by the 26
December 2004 tsunami.

ON THE WILD POPULATION STATUS AND TRADE DYNAMICS OF HUMPHEAD WRASSE
CHEILINUS UNDULATUS. The Humphead (Napoleon) wrasse, Cheilinus undulatus,
was listed on Appendix II of CITES
(Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) in October
of 2004. It was listed because it is considered to be actually or potentially
threatened by current exploitation levels or disturbances if these persist.

THE WTO INTERIM BIOTECH RULING -- WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? The release
of the interim ruling by the WTO panel assessing the US/Canada/Argentina
complaint against the EU's alleged de facto moratorium on the approval
of new biotech products has attracted widespread public attention. The
resulting 1,050-page document will require careful reading and analysis
to identify the key findings and their implications. In addition, the
interim ruling - and the case as a whole - has raised fundamental questions
about the impact of WTO rules on the approach countries take to dealing
